Lockheed Legacy

The SR-71 Blackbird is the world’s fastest stealth jet funded and commissioned by the United States Air Force in 1966. This was a jet that was completely invisible at the time by radar, with its objective to be so fast that not even a missile or any other jet could catch it; they succeeded. In its years of service two missiles had been fired at the aircraft and those two had missed. The Lockheed SR-71 was capable of 3,540km/h, that’s almost three times the speed of sound – and a quarter of the speed of light. At those speeds, even the slightest of turns can reach 7G (7xGravity) – enough to make any person pass out. The aircraft operated so hot that the internal components had to be spaced out so much that in the event of maximum expansion the plane wouldn’t tear itself apart, which resulted in fuel leaking on the ground as the fuel tanks weren’t sealed when the aircraft wasn’t moving. Retired in 1999, only a few remain in the world today – Some on static displays and a known five rest in classified US bunkers as ‘reserve storage’. The Blackbird remains today the pinnacle of aviation engineering.
